Health Tips :: Overview

Here are a few basic health tips to practice everyday.  You might read these and say they are all common sense.  Then why aren't you doing them?

1. Exercise More
Make time everyday to get out and move around. Climbing stairs can be great exercise instead of taking the elevator. Walk your dog, play with your kids or just walk around the block. People often overlook the benefits of just getting up and moving. A brisk walk is not only a great way to stay fit but it also eliminates stress and can lower blood pressure over time.

2. Eliminate Fat
Cut out the obvious fried greasy fast food and burgers. Eat low fat versions of your favorite cheeses and other dairy products. Also consider toppings and sauces, alfredo sauce has more fat than most cheese burgers! Lean meats, fruits, veggies, and whole grains should make up the majority of your new healthy diet.

3. Quit Smoking
This is one that everyone knows by now. Smoking is bad for you for a number of reasons that we don't have to go over again. Plus its also gross, people don't like to be around a smoker. There are many stop smoking aids available today, find one that works for you and make the commitment to finally quit.

4. Reduce Stress
Make sure to find time every day to relax. Try not to go to bed angry, the stress will carry through to the next day. Try meditating or doing something else to take your mind off stressful situations. Count to ten before losing your temper, or take a walk to calm down. Stress is one of the worst things for your health, so cut it out of your life now.

5. watch out for Pollution
We can't all live in pristine mountain environments, but you can avoid many harmful pollution filled environments. Stay indoors during heavy smog days. avoid smoke filled bars and parties. Don't go jogging on a busy, congested street. There are many places that you can go to avoid pollution, so get out and find them!

6. Always Buckle Up
Seat belts save lives isn't just a catchy slogan, its a fact. When your driving or riding in a car wear your seatbelt. Its also illegal to drive without one in many states.

7. Floss Your Teeth
The health of your mouth is in many ways related to your overall health. People who floss live longer, on average, than non-flossers. Also, make sure to brush and see your dentist twice a year.

8. Don't drink too much
Drinking can be a great way to unwind after a long day, but don't over do it. Some studies even show that a glass or two of red wine can have health benefits, but any more than that has a negative impact.

9. Stay Positive
Try to have a positive outlook on life. You'll not only live a longer less stressful life, but you'll be more fun to be around. Happy people live longer, and in many ways, better lives than people with a bad attitude. Try looking at obstacles in life as challenges to overcome.

10. Know your parents
Genetics make up a big part of your overall health. If you have a family history of a certain disease you can start working now to avoid things that may trigger it. If diabetes or heart disease are illnesses you're prone to start adjusting your diet and exercise early and you might not have to deal with declining health in the future.
